cigar humidor

Arch 3216

DATE: 2018

TYPE: DESIGN BUILD

PROBLEM:

Cache- “a collection of items of the same type stored in a hidden or inaccessible place.”

“God is in the details” is a common cliche, but as an architect and designer this can often be truth, and in the best forms of the art, is. The point of this project was to zoom in. So much of architecture becomes so grand in scale that the details are forgotten. By creating something physical and not ethereal , questions had to be answered, and details had to be god.

sOLUTION:

After a humidor was the decided upon cache, a lot of questions had to be answered. Finger joints were decided upon for wood swelling and humidity control. Spanish Cedar is the industry standard for cigar boxes and very expensive as well as unsustainable. By reusing old shipping cigar boxes salvaged from a local cigar shop, the cost was basically absorbed and a lot of character was added to the design.

The abstracted K (standing for my last name, “King”) was made out of brass to compliment the wood, as well as add an elegant strength to the locking mechanism.
